Obama Presidential Portrait With Homer Funny
BARACK Obama has been given the internet treatment after a portrait he commissioned was unveiled at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington DC.
The painting shows America's first black president seated in a serious pose at the edge of a wooden chair surrounded by thick foliage and flowers.
But social media were quick to react to the work by Kehinde Wiley - turning it into various memes and with the hashtag #obamaportraits trending on Twitter for most of Monday.
By far the most widely shared was the famous GIF of Homer Simpson fading into the bushes.
Others showed people trying their own hand at hiding in foliage and others inserted former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer seemingly peering at him from behind the leaves.
Some suggested they were getting a "Beyonce vibe" from the portrait, comparing it to her iconic pregnancy image where is wearing a veil and surrounded by brightly coloured flowers.
Another meme juxtaposed Obama on The Beatles Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Band album cover.
The depiction of foliage in the painting is intended to honour Obama's roots - including chrysanthemums, which are the official flower of Chicago, jasmine to evoke Hawaii, where Obama largely grew up, and African blue lilies in tribute to Obama's Kenyan father.
The former president, who personally chose Wiley, joked that the artist listened carefully to his suggestions and then ignored most of them.
Obama said he asked for less grey hair and was and also tried to "negotiate smaller ears and struck out on that as well."
Meanwhile, his wife Michelle Obama didn't escape the jokes either as she appeared far than impressed when her portrait was revealed today in front of a crowd.
She personally commissioned Baltimore-based artist Amy Sherald, first-prize winner of the Portrait Gallery's 2016 Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition to produce her paining.
But many social media critics slammed the image and questioned whether it was really her.
Dr. Eugene Gu, a health care columnist for The Hill, tweeted: "Michelle Obama is an elegant lady and the portrait looks nice. But clearly, the artist drew someone else."

The former first lady is painted in "grayscale" - a charcoal colour with taupe undertones - and is seated, with her chin resting on her hand and wearing a bold print dress.
A second and different set of portraits of the former first couple will eventually hang in the White House.
Barack Obama's portrait was painted by Kehinde Wiley an artist best known for his vibrant, large-scale paintings of African-Americans.
The portraits will be officially installed and available for public viewing starting tomorrow.
